PROJECT DESCRIPTION

I moved to France 7 years ago with one goal in mind: the Vendée Globe 2016. People who know me can tell you that when I have my mind set on something, i'm very determined! My mother is a New-Zealander who met my USA father half way through a circumnavigation. They met travelling around the Pacific Islands and I set sail for the first time when I was a month old on my dad's boat: « Blown Away ».

I decided to go to the USA to finish high school and then continued my studies in economic at the university in Colorado. While in the middle of the mountains, mountain biking slaked my thirst for adventure in the perfect outdoor playground. Once I graduated, my desire for offshore racing took over and I move to Europe to pursue my dream. There, I progressed quickly: first solo Transat on a Mini 6.50, then the Route du Rhum on a Class40, a victory in the 'Global Ocean Race' ( a race around the world, double handed with stops) and completing the Barcelona World Race on an IMOCA as a co-skipper for « Spirit of Hungary ».

The ‘Vendée Globe’ is perhaps more rightly known as the ‘Everest’ of yacht racing than the large crewed races; around the world, but also solo and non-stop!  I would become the first Kiwi to participate, introducing New Zealanders to extreme solo yacht racing by sharing the adventure with as many as possible through media coverage as well as my blog.

THE PROJECT

The Vendée Globe is a 45 000km race around the world, solo, and without stops! The race leaves from les Sables d’Olonne (in France), on November 6th 2016 and comes back to that same city between 75 and 100 days after that.

I’m a vegetarian, committed to raising awareness about the environment and I want to be the first skipper to manage going around the world in that race without using fossil energy. Using an event like the Vendée Globe to promote something that is important for me is really motivating. I want to show people that alternative power can work well and it is a great opportunity.

How will it work on board?

All participants to the race are IMOCA 60: 18,23 meters monohulls. They have to comply with IMOCA Class rules for security reasons but the boats are far from identical since the oldest boat in the race was built in 1997 and the newest one came out in 2015! Technical and financial gaps are quite big from one project to another but the competition will be great within boats from the same generation.

My boat, Galileo, was built in Brazil in 2004, started the Vendée Globe 2008 and participated in several Transatlantic races before being used as a charter boat in Brittany.

Boat ID:

Lengh: 18 meters => Longer than a humpback whale!

Weight: 9 tons => 7 cars

Sails area: 480 sqm => 5 tennis courts

Mast: 28m => 9 story building

Goals

I already have half of the budget and can thus: finish the winter refit, do my qualification voyage and participate in the New-York / Vendée race next May. At the moment, I can’t afford to be on the start line for the Vendée Globe in November and am still looking for a title sponsor.

If I launch into this crowdfunding campaign today, it’s to help me finance a part of the project that is really important for me: the « green side », which corresponds to a battery bank (10 000€), an electric motor that will also be used as a generator (10 000€) and solar panels integrated in the mainsail (15 000€)

By helping me pay for this part of the project, you allow me to put in place something that could then be used on all racing yachts but also for the general public.

my sponsors already on board: OceanVolt, Power Cloth System, UK Sailmakers, GILL Marine, Spinlock, Biocoop, Furuno.

The diagram below shows how the budget is divided for a project like the Vendée Globe
